Geometry of higher-order variational calculus    [PDF]

We present a new geometric description of higher-order variational calculus. In our formulation we recover the full structure of the Lagrangian formalism, i.e., Euler-Lagrange equations together with momenta (boundary terms). Our formalism,without using any sophisticated mathematical tools, goes in line with the standard procedure of deriving EL equations form the variation of the action functional. It is also free from some serious drawbacks of other formulations known in literature.
